Air Berlin is an absolute disaster from baggage handling standpoint. The internet is filled with stories of their complete lack of regard for the passengger who is missing luggage. DO NOT FLY WITH THIS DISASTER

My son forgot his Nintendo 3dS game and Gap sweater on his seat during our annual trip to Poland. We were the last passengers off the plane. To date, no one claims they found it. Customer service was not at all helpful. The didn't seem to want to go out of their way to look for items. I have used air berlin in previous years flying to Europe but probably will not ever again.

Guest : Guest : Guest : Flew Air Berlin Florence-Duesseldorf-JFK on 8/23 and lost 2 bags. AB representative at JFK took information on paper and said she would enter it into the system and we would be contacted when bag is found... 4 days later: almost 100 phone calls, no status at all and no bags! The contact number at JFK (718-244-0921) goes to a voice mailbox that has no room for a message. Called DUS lost and found (+49 21142160380) and got no answer. Called reservations and was told they cannot help without a claim number. Any ideas??? update: 2 hints of progress in the last 24 hours: 1 - i contacted Triangle Services (AB subcontractor) at 888-587-4264 and spoke w/ Marie Reynolds. She indicated that Triangle provides ticketing services for AB but was helping with issues similar to mine. I received a call from Peter who said he would work with AB to locate the bags. I got a call back indicating they have been found in DUS and that he requested them to be expedited back. 2 - i received an email response from service@baggageexpress.de indicating that our bags were found and would be on a JFK today. waiting anxiously... update: additional progress last night. I received a text message from Peter at Triangle Services indicating the bags arrived in JFK and we would be contacted by Air Berlin shortly... that happened! Omar from Air Berlin JFK called (718-244-0921 - from the number that always went to voice mail). He said the bags would arrive today via a delivery service company called BEX. After 7 days, we are anxiously awaiting the return of our 2 bags. Last update: we finally received our 2 bags on Friday night... a full 7 days after our flight. I think the reason for the long delay was the original JFK rep didn't enter our claim into the system. We were able to finally get our bags due to the efforts of Peter at Triangle Services. Thank you!!

I recently endured the most dreadful experience I have ever had in many decades of flying around the world. On a flight fr om Cologne, GE connecting to Berlin and then on to Oslo, Air Berlin lost EVERY passenger's checked bag on the flight fr om Berlin to Oslo. That's a couple hundred bags. Bags were off-loaded at the carousel where ours were supposed to arrive, but apparently Air Berlin loaded the wrong flight's checked bags. Inexcusable and disastrous for everyone. Everyone was then left on their own to try to figure out where to go to make a claim. There wasn't a single AB representative on the ground in Oslo. We finally figured out it was an outfit called Menzies wh ere we waited in a hideously long queue to fill out a claim form. This process took about two hours. We were exhausted and expected our bags to arrive later that night and be delivered to our hotel on the next flight. That was not to be. We were leaving Oslo the next morning for Bergen so we had to get ahold of Air Berlin and advise them of the address of our hotel in Bergen expecting them to be delivered the next day. Didn't happen. Since all we had with us were the clothes on our backs and no toiletries, we had to get all new toiletries and enough clothes to get us through. After a couple of days in Bergen, still no luggage. We spent many hours and hundreds of dollars calling AB's call center as well as Menzies. Wretched, non-existent customer "service". Well, it was on to London wh ere we again left our hotel address with Air Berlin. Finally, six days after our debacle began, our luggage arrived soaking wet and mildewy at our London hotel with no apology from AB and no notice. We then asked their call center about a reimbursement claim for our expenses and time. They said there is no phone number!!! to call for making a reimbursement claim, one had to SCAN all the pertinent documents and e-mail a claim to them. We were told we would receive an automated response back by e-mail that it was received. It's seven days later and still no response. We'll fight these guys for our money back as long as it takes. Hideous, horrible airline. DO NOT fly them unless you have absolutely no other choice. No discounted fare is worth what we went through by having our holiday ruined.

READ IT: On August 23 I had a scheduled flight to Palma de Mallorca I was on time in front of the door: Air Berlin Palma de Mallorca. Nobody informed that Air Berlin decided to keep two flights, at the same time, for the same place which, of course, often confuses passengers who -like me- missed their flight because there is no adequate information from this airline. Air Berlin suggested that if I pay 640 Euros, I could get on another flight which was boarding. Passengers are forced to pay extra to get to their booked destination. I had an urgent commitment in Mallorca and I had to pay 200 Euros to flight next day.

'hope Air Berlin's cockpit and maint' staff are better than every other level of their personnel I've encountered. Frankly, Air Berlin is THE worst airline I've flown in my life, and those include Eastern, TWA, Pan Am and other now defunct carriers - to which list Air Berlin has surely earned a place on. The sooner they're history - the better.

'just read the last post and couldn't agree more; Air Berlin is simply un-'air'-worthy. they're so not yet ready for prime time it isn't funny. After our one and only experience with Air Berlin, I'd use a skate-board to get where I'm going before I'd try 'em again. They're simply dreadful.

Air Berlin - AVOID AT ANY/ALL COSTS. To call 'em the Greyhound of the skies would be insulting to Greyhound. We flew American {business-class} to Dusseldorf on June 21st and had to run through the maze of duty-free shops in Dusseldorf and down three flights of stairs to get to a bus to take us to our Air Berlin connecting flight out on the tarmac to Catania, Sicily/Italy - then we sat on the ground for an hour. The return was a complete debacle. We arrived at the airport in Catania on the morning of June 30th two and a half hours before scheduled departure [7 a.m. for a 9:30 a.m. departure] - with pre-printed boarding passes in hand, and spent over three hour in line checking in. One check-in counter staff was checking in two flights scheduled to depart within 30 minutes of each other and she spoke no English. We arrived considerably late into Dusseldorf and our connecting business-class flight to New York's JFK was long gone. When we deplaned there was nobody from Air Berlin anywhere near the gate and - after no information being given out during the flight, we went to no less than four Air Berlin counters before someone would take ownership of our being stranded in Dusseldorf. They gave us {my wife and me} two 10 Euro vouchers and put us in the airport hotel - advising us that we couldn't get out until the following afternoon. We arrived back int he States 24 hours or so later than we were scheduled to have done so. Air Berlin is... a disaster. They're under-staffed, poorly-prepared [in the air and on the ground], their food is less than minimally acceptable, they're... utterly disorganized and wholly detrimental to affiliation with American Airlines and/or the One World Alliance. I would NEVER fly them again! Mind you, this is how they treated a million-miler/lifetime gold, business-class passenger. It was simply THE worst flight experience I've had to date and I've had A LOT of flights. Avoid Air Berlin - period / end of story. If you can't find another viable airline to get you to your destination, take the train, take a boat - swim there, but, DON'T even think about Air Berlin {they're seriously challenged}

Bad service from baggageexpress.de as well from Air Berlin.Unbelievable. We are preparing for a claim. Does anyone have tips for the claim?

We flew on 6.8. from Vienna to Copenhagen with AirBerlin, unfortunatelly over Berlin-Tegel and they lost our luggages on this route. As we have been continuing to Greenland it was not fun to step out in Greenland without our camping equipment and clothes....Finally and luckily our bags arrived two days later, but their customer care is on zero level and it was virtually impossible to get any information from them. It is by far my worst experience than with any other airline, I wrote them email asking for refund, but no answer so far and in Vienna they pointed us just to customer service department in Berlin... It is unbelievable, I would like to ask other passenger whether they perhaps have some experiences how to claim any refund back from them??? I wish Good Luck for everybody whose bag is still missing!!

We were on the same flight perhaps? 7450 from Dusseldorf to JFK; we originated in Rome Flight No. 8841. We have not heard a thing, and when we completed the claim form w/the AB Rep at JFK, she just gave us a phone number to call w/no baggage reference number. If you are in NY, and have any info. please share. My personal email is: quina66@aol.com : Guest : My luggage was never transferred to my connecting flight from Dusseldorf to JFK. I have been sick with bronchitis and a double ear infection (thank you Ibitha) so I haven't really had time to freak out. I was told by JFK employees at Air Berlin someone would deliver it in 2-3 days but its been 6 days. Now that I feel better I need to figure this out. I keep calling Air Berlin but I am being told to check the airport lost and found. I mean that answer is so bad you cant help but laugh. Can anyone give me a phone number to start calling. I planned on going back to JFK tomorrow to speak with a supervisor. I am going to record the whole thing with my found and send it to the news channels.

Update: Our bags were delivered safely to us on August 16. Nothing missing, nothing mysteriously wet. However, they gave us no heads-up that they were coming or when to expect them so my husband had to run home from a friend's bbq. Guest : My husband and I flew via Air Berlin from JFK to Berlin on Aug 1 and the bags never arrived in Oslo on Aug 2. Like many of you I have not yet received our luggage or heard whether it has been located or is still "delayed." Was anyone else on flight AB8246 on Aug 2 whose bags were lost and subsequently found? Also, any feedback in regards to actually getting reimbursed for costs associated with missing luggage throughout a 10 day vacation?

Air Berlin managed to loose our bags, and delay their delivery for 4 days (almost half of our vacation). Then on our way back, they managed to loose them again!!! Both times there was a lot of people with us in the cue for lost luggage complaints. This seems to be very common. Try to avoid this airline when going on vacation. We documented our experience in this blog airberlinlostourbags.com

Flew Berlin to JFK on August 7th, after 13 days we STILL do not have any of our luggage from that flight and we STILL have not heard a PEEP from Air Berlin about whether if or when we will ever see our luggage again. Customer service numbers are simply a reservation department that can only help with reservations or apologize for the fact that they can only help with reservations. The other customer service number is a recording of a number reciting a fax number, in case you have one of those lying around. Reporting the lost luggage at JFK entailed fighting through a disorganized mob (no line) of other * passengers to speak to a woman literally working on top of a trash can to write down our baggage numbers on a post it note. "Lost and found department" at JFK is called between 60 and 80 times a day, manage to talk with someone once every other day and the response is always the same: "I'm sorry, your luggage didn't arrive today, let's hope it arrives on tomorrow's flight". There is literally no way to TALK with anyone with Air Berlin about how to resolve this or be compensated for the belongings that we have had to replace after going without them for going on 2 weeks not. Literally hundreds of emails, phone calls, voice mails, web form submissions, faxes(?!) have all gone unresponded. Food, In Flight Entertainment, Seat Comfort or anything related to a few hour flight experience are INCONSEQUENTIAL compared to the permanent and irreversible effect of losing thousands of dollars of personal and in some cases sentimental belongings. Not to mention the unending aggravation and * of time investing effort to try to get my luggage back or be compensated for it. All of that * is meaningless if Air Berlin can't figure out how to run an airline in a responsible manner to begin with.

20 August 2013 06:08:00 How to take Air Berlin to Court

Hi, I am facing the same issues. If you live in the united states don't worry. A little work and you can get your money back and the cost of your air fare refunded. Take Air Berlin to Small Claims Court. It is cheap ($45) it is quick and they can not send an attorney to represent themselves. If you have a legitimate claim you will get your money back. More importantly if enough people do this Air Berlin will get the message that we are tired of NO customer service and treating customers with no respect is not acceptable. I will provided detailed instructions soon.

We have travled Zürich <-> Helsinki over Berlin Tegel (6 person, 5 luggage). On both directions we lost all our luggage. At Helsinki it was delivered 3 days later, in Zürich the following day. This seems quite good, if you read the other posts in this forum. Lesson learned: Never travel over TXL with air Berlin.

I traveled fr om JFk Malaga, Spain, with a stop over Berlin on August 12. Upon arrival to Spain my bag and several other passenger bags did not arrive. I was the first one to file a claim at the airport lost baggage claim in Malaga, the line behind me was very long. today is the 20th of August and I am back in Boston , Mass (home) my bag has not yet arrived. I have tried all the telephone numbers that I can get my hands on, like everyone else explained, air Berlin does not care, the baggage handlers are thieves and the bag is practically gone. I have called the agent in Malaga daily to inquire about the bag, 11 bags arrived the next day mine was not one of them. I have filed a missing bag report on line, and have sent several emails to : service@baggageexpress.de us-customs@airberlin.com I have had no communication from the above emails, it has been at least 3 days since I last wrote. the following numbers have these problems: lost and found air Berlin: +49-30-34-34-46-46 ( just a message in English and German, but you wait and no agent appears) Agent handler: +49-30-410175442(either busy all the time or the line does not connect and if it does it gives you some kind of machine to dial the last name of the person , after which you are disconnected. Basically this gets you no wh ere) Airport information can't help you, air Berlin on line claim form is useless since it feels like they never look at it.

I was supposed to collect my bag in Chicago, it never arrived. The last flight was handled by American Airlines, so I filed my report with them and contacted them. They were kind and quite helpful. But I also emailed AirBerlin and didn't get any response. Fortunately my bag arrived yesterday after 6 days. From now on I'll discourage everyone from travelling with AirBerlin, it cost me a lot of nerves because I had my life support medications in that bag. I hope you'll all receive your bags. I think this issue should go to the public anyway.[/QOUTE Who/where did you contact American Airlines? ON 8/10, I flew through them to my ultimate destination, as well, but I'm not finding more than their message machines. Thanks for the help.

We travelled fr om Kuwait to Frankfurt, via Abu Dhabhi and Berlin last week. First of all, our flight took off 1.5 hour late from Abu Dhabhi due to some refuelling issue and it made us miss our connecting flight in Berlin Tegel, they asked us wait for another 4-5 hours to take next flight. I had a doubt whether they will transfer my luggage or not, so I checked at the counter thrice confirming will my baggage be transferred on this new flight number, every time they confirmed ofcourse it will be done. After reaching Frankfurt I see my entire baggage is missing....I feeling like kicking those fellows. Imagine I'm on Europe Holiday with kids and not even single bag is with us. After registering the complaint, I spoke to customer care and as usual those people had no complete information about delayed or lost baggage and they gave a number which no one ever picked up, when asked how should I go about till my luggage is found, they asked me to purchase the required items (each passenger lim it is 50 USD per day) and scan the bill and send it through mail. Believing them I spent money on purchase of some clothes and other stuffs as we had to travel the next day to Swiss and sent across the bill. Its been a week now they are yet refund it and when I call up customer care same answer no information wait for mail reply. After going through all comments below now I feel lucky and thankful to God that we atleast got our baggage after 2 days ( Ofcourse they were not in the same condition how I packed it, lost of damage to bags and items in side, God knows what actually happened). I think its time that we all should STOP using Air Berlin till they fix or properly handle this kind of issues.

Guest : I have the same problem. Missing baggage from Dusseldorf to Cancun. No help or support from AIr Berlin. Outrageous. This is my second disastrous meeting with Air Berlin... I suggest you stay well away. I am shocked how bad the Air Berlin service is. They have lost my bag on a direct flight from Palma de Mallorca to Munich on August 12. The bags of friends of mine got also lost on the same flight. Since their tickets were booked by the secretary of the Air Berlin office of the board of management, they had VIP badges attached to their luggage. This seemed to be very helpful as their bags were brought to them only a day later. I cannot understand why it takes F-I-V-E days to locate my bag, when it all seems to be so easy with a VIP badge..... No one contacted me....only if I call 30 times in a row there is a chance someone picks up the phone at the aerogate in Munich. Air Berlin Service centre is grotesque....no help at all...it is impossible to get an answer on how much they repay of the things I had to buy.....and there is no number of the Air Berlin customer service.....only an email address....no answers there....they just don't seem to care....

Up till this morning I shared exactly the sentiment of all other comments here. But after 4 days of waiting, very early this saturday morning I got a phone call that my backpack was recovered and an hour ago it was delivered at my holiday address. I had a flight from Gothenburg Landvetter to Berlin Tegel. I was kindly helped at Air Berlin's desk when my backpack failed to show up on the belt (my backpack is rather large, with loose straps; I had to check it in at the "odd sized luggage", which already left me with a gut feeling saying "this might go wrong"). I was served quickly, but while processing my case, a large queue formed behind me... I appeared to have arrived at the desk at a good time, because I then noticed that this is a large problem for AB and Tegel. After hearing nothing for 4 days and getting really scared by the online reviews and experiences, I'm really happy to have my luggage back. I hope it turns out like this for you guys, too. But I will think twice before flying again with AB and/or to Tegel!

Update-My daughters suitcase was delivered this morning, it had been missing since August 8th (9 days). She flew from Munich to Berlin and landed in Miami on Aug. 9th FL7210 at 2:30 p.m. I hope some of you have luck with your luggage, it's a terrible situation for so many.

A llittle update on the 2 bags lost from Sweden to Ibiza on the 7th of August (with a 2,5 hour stop in Tegel). On the 8th day my bag was located and sent to the airport in Ibiza. During this time we did not have a single reply from air berlin, even after sending a very detailed baggage description. Special thanks to the woman that works in the lost and found in Ibiza airport. She was the only one that was actually helpfull. The same day my bag appeared, we were flying back to Sweden. I dreadfully checked in my bag again, never expecting it to arrive, as this time our stop at Tegel was just 1 hour. Surprisingly my bag arrived in Göteborg. During all this time, my friends bag was still missing. In Göteborg we were told that it was in Copenhagen and she recieved it this morning. So basically, thank you air berlin, for letting me spend a week in Ibiza, wearing ugly clothes, getting my hair destroyed with cheap products and not being able to use my creams till today. Now we have part 2 of the adventure: how long will it take them to repay us the expenses during the week...

We flew from Malaga directly to Cologne on the 9th of Aug. One bag missing till today containing valuables, all cosmetic needs and new clothes as we were attending a special event. As like many here, we have called several times, not one human to answer; dug around online and found 6 email addresses other than the one on a piece of paper they gave us. Sent several emails to all 7 with complete description of the bag, which happens to be a unique bag with a giant skull on it. Not a single response. We called Air Berlin Malaga and were told about the massive bag loss in Berlin...what have that got to do with us as we never flew through Berlin...it was a direct flight from Malaga. Now on our 7th day of total inconvenience without everyday basic needs. This is simply unbelievable and unacceptable. We must return to the US but we can't even plan for that until we find a resolution. What a farce, what a joke and how dare they treat their passengers like this is beyond me. Those who are in the position should do something about this please.

I have have experience more or less the same thing than you guys. Took an Air Berlin flight Helsinki-Berlin Tegel-Dusseldorf on August 5th and never seen my suitcase after that. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE AIR BERLIN FLIGHT OR ACTUALLY REALLY TEGEL AIRPORT. Does anyone have connections to Berlin newspapers? Now wordtracer shows that the suitcase has been located, but no phone call nothing. Nobody answers phone nor the emails and when I went to the airport yesterday, it was really chaotic. There were dozens of people waiting and reclaiming their baggage. I think the personnel is so exhausted and they just don't care. AIR Berlin management this is NOT possible. Errors happen, but that many errors is not acceptable and especially your non-existant customer "service". Luckily I have a travel/baggage insurance, but of course it is not compensating everything!!!!!
